Tower Regeneration Ltd Proposed Southern Extension
Monday 11th of January 2016 15:04
Tower Regeneration Limited (TRL) is proposing to extract approximately 1.2 million tonnes of coal from the southern extension and undertake restoration over a period of three years, in part running simultaneously with operations within the existing site. Progressive restoration will occur on a phased basis as the mineral is extracted.
The method of extraction and equipment used will be the same as the existing site and it is anticipated that no blasting will be required.
The overburden mound starts to reduce in volume in line with the original planning permission from June 2017. The removal of material will take place from the rear of the mound ( mountain side ) to both minimise the visual impact of extraction operations and to assist in noise and dust mitigation.
The minerals will be transported primarily by rail, as is currently the case with the existing site.
Site Area: Original Planning Permission 253Ha plus 47Ha for the Southern Extension Coal to be extracted in Approx. 1.2 million tonnes the Southern Extension:
Jobs Secured: Approximately 150 direct employees for the additional time period, with over 50 indirect employees.
Area of Restoration: 300Ha (Total Original and proposed Extension).
Delivered: Project Duration: It is anticipated that if planning consent is obtained in a timely manner then the southern extension can be extracted alongside existing operations, with restoration completed by approximately November 2021, this will be 8 months longer than the programmed date for the completion of the restoration on the Main Site.
Coal Transported: Via existing conveyor belt and rail link, plus HGV movements by road.
Community: The Tower Fund has made significant contributions to both local and other Benefits: communities since operations at the site began, providing almost £2 million (including match funding sourced by Tower). The Southern Extension will continue to significantly benefit the four local areas and will further strengthen local employment.
The exhibitions will outline the proposals and give local residents the opportunity to express their views to members of the project team.
