Tower Regeneration has been Shortlisted at the Love Where You Live Awards 2014

Tower Regeneration is proud to announce that the company has been short listed for the Best Environmental Partnership Initiative at the Love Where You Live Awards 2014. This award will recognise the achievements of a partnership initiative that can demonstrate that their project has had a beneficial effect on the environment and the wider community.

Tower Regeneration Limited (Tower) is a joint venture partnership between Tower Colliery Ltd and Hargreaves Services Plc, who through successful planning consent for land remediation and reclamation, including surface coal extraction, and land restoration of the former Tower Colliery site, near Hirwaun.

Tower Regeneration is located near the village of Hirwaun, in Glamorgan, South Wales. The colliery, established in 1864, has been linked in the past with nearby mines, none of which remain operational. Purchased by the workforce in December 1994, the mine was successfully operated until the exhaustion of the workable underground reserves in January 2008.

Tower Colliery is mining again through opencast methods, with the long-term aim of regenerating the land for economic, environmental and social purposes, leaving a lasting legacy to the local community. As part of Tower Colliery’s seven year opencast mining programme, a community fund – the Tower Fund – has been set up which will be spent creating opportunities and regenerating the surrounding communities of Penywaun, Rhigos, Hirwaun and Penderyn.

The money will allow local people to develop innovative and much-needed projects. The communities will not only be able to bid for money from the fund to support their applications, they will also be part of a committee that helps to decide where the money is spent.

The amount of money involved in the fund is expected to run into millions of pounds so, as well as supporting small community ideas such as play parks, we are looking for communities to identify large, sustainable projects that can really make a difference to economic and social regeneration.

For every tonne of coal that is sold from the opencast mining at Tower Colliery, 44 pence is being put into a community fund - the Tower Fund – which is to be spent in the surrounding communities of Hirwaun, Rhigos, Penderyn and Penywaun.

The Tower Fund will add up to millions of pounds over the next seven years, making it a once in a lifetime opportunity to regenerate these communities and make them fit for purpose for the 21st century.

Anyone who lives in one of these four communities can apply for a grant from the Tower Fund. Grants will be available to support all sorts of community projects - big and small – from social enterprises and 'green' energy schemes to training opportunities and youth projects.

As part of its commitment to supporting communities in mining areas Tower Fund will also be creating a 'Common Fund'. This will benefit other communities within the South Wales area and will receive 5 pence per tonne of mineral sold from Tower Colliery.
